The Climate Smart Communities Initiative (CSCI)
Greensleeves is proud to have received initial start-up funding through the Climate Smart Communities Initiative. CSCI is a unique public-private partnership that provides financial, technical, and other assistance to help communities facing significant climate challenges with limited resources, to advance their climate resilience plans, projects and capacities, as climate impacts intensify. For the 2025 national grant cycle, CSCI selected Greensleeves project initiation as one of 21 funded proposals. Project partners are Sierra Streams Institute, acting as Fiscal Sponsor and Climate Adaptation Professional, and the California Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP) now; HUSWEJ providing critical start-up consulting and field training for the team.
Sierra Streams Institute is a watershed monitoring, research, and ecological restoration organization based in Nevada City, California, dedicated to increasing watershed stewardship capacity throughout the Sierra Nevada region and beyond. SSI works with local, state, and federal agencies as well as universities and community groups to find solutions to the problems that afflict Deer Creek, Bear River and other watersheds throughout the region that share the challenges resulting from a century and a half of gold mining, development, and agriculture. SSI’s emphasis on rigorous science and consistent data collection provides the basis for restoration decisions that target whole ecosystem regeneration, and flourishing for both human and more than human communities here in the wildland urban interface. Sierra Streams Institute has served as our Fiscal sponsor and Climate Adaptation advisor for Greensleeves project start-up.
HUSWEJ
formerly California Heritage Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP)
HUṠWEJ is a Tribally-guided nonprofit created to carry forward the wishes, responsibilities, and long-term vision of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe. It's mission is to preserve, protect, and perpetuate Nisenan Culture. HUSWEJ generously agreed to mentor this project because, through a tribal lens, humans are nature, and true conservation involves human hands returning to the land and creatively re-imagining a future in which ancient wisdom and modern society are merged. The Greensleeves pilot aims to re-establish this way of being in relation to the land, through recruitment, training, and mentorship of stewarding crew(s) dedicated to healing the land by hand.
Wolf Creek Community Alliance
Beginning two decades ago, concerned citizens gathered as the Wolf Creek Community Alliance to protect the creek running through the town of Grass Valley, California. Recently the organization, supported almost entirely by volunteers, received a generous donation and became a land steward, dedicated to protecting and restoring the Roy Peterson Preserve; 56 riparian acres along the south fork of Wolf Creek. Kristen Hein Strohm, Project Director at WCCA was instrumental to Greensleeves start-up and this past spring the Greensleeves crew worked hard to remove mature Scotch Broom spread over 4 acres in the riparian corridor at the Roy Peterson preserve.
Our Mission & Vision
The MISSION of Greensleeves is to HEAL THE LAND BY HAND:
We mean to accomplish this by hiring, training and fielding, a small, mobile team (and soon enough , teams) capable of performing fuel-reduction and ecological restoration treatments on public and private lands in the Sierra Nevada. Greensleeves will recruit from marginalized and under-served communities, often blocked from the traditional job market; such as people exiting homelessness, and/or re-entering the community after incarceration.
The VISION of Greensleeves is:
To support the long-term return to abundant ecological thriving in California, with reduced wildfire-risk, bio-diversity resurgence and native plant regeneration, led by indigenous ecological knowledge and fostered by returning the human hand to the land in a way that is regenerative, supporting the entire web of life, rather than tied to profit, extractive, or damaging to the web of relations that facilitate human life on earth. Greensleeves will pursue workforce development that lifts individuals out of poverty and grows the restoration economy locally and regionally.
